300 million devices will be powered HarmonyOS operating system in 2021, reiterates Huawei
Huawei China Ecological Conference 2021 is going on between May 17 and May 18, 2021. On the first day of the event, Huawei’s rotating chairman Xu Zhijun (Eric Xu) delivered a keynote speech on HarmonyOS (Hongmeng OS).
During the speech, Eric mentioned that Huawei has aimed to install open source HarmonyOS on at least 300 million devices approximately of which 200 million are Huawei devices and 100 million from third manufacturers of the industry.
HarmonyOS:
“HarmonyOS is Huawei’s fully owned distributed operating system, which is mainly designed to reduce its dependency on Android and provide more capabilities and platform support than the existing mobile operating system.” said Eric
At Huawei Developer Conference (HDC) 2019, Huawei first time launched HarmonyOS 1.0 with distributed capabilities, cross-device connection, and three core capabilities of distributed software bus.
Furthermore, at HDC 2020, the Chinese tech giant released the new version of HarmonyOS 2.0 with extended platform support and new features. Since December 2020, the HarmonyOS 2.0 beta developer testing is underway and soon starts for the general consumers in early June.
Open-source HarmonyOS 2.0:
After the OpenHarmony 1.1.0 LTS (Long Term Support) with an AI subsystem, power management subsystem, unified AI engine framework, and more. Recently, it was reported that OpenHarmony 2.0 will be open source from May 16 to June 2.
According to the information, OpenHarmony 2.0 has about 4.6 million lines of key code and multiple code branches, which is equivalent to 30% of Android 10.
The L2 code branch is open this time is a pure HarmonyOS version, which does not have any Android code. It can run all distributed apps, calls, and Internet, but there are not a large number of ll HarmonyOS applications.
However, Open HarmonyOS 2.0 L3 to L5 branch has a dual-frame design that is compatible with Android and will also be open source.
