Huawei Pura 70 series chip is years behind advanced tech: US Commerce Secretary
It’s only been a few days since the Huawei Pura 70 series launch and the US Commerce Secretary began commenting on the phone maker’s new 7nm Kirin chip. A recent report shows how Gina Raimondo devalues the new Huawei Kirin 5G chipset.
During an interview at CBS News ”60 Minutes”, Gina Raimondo – the US Commerce Secretary said the new Huawei phone shows that China is still far behind in chip tech. She adds that Biden administration’s trade controls proved to be a success.
The US Commerce Secretary further says that the new Huawei 7nm chip doesn’t have as advanced and cutting-edge capabilities as the American processors.
“What it tells me is the export controls are working because that chip is not nearly as good. It’s years behind what we have in the United States. We have the most sophisticated semiconductors in the world. China doesn’t. We’ve out-innovated China” – says Raimondo.
Gina strongly believes that the U.S. export controls have affected the ability of Chinese companies to conduct the chip war and made it even harder compared to earlier. While the chip world is leading with a 3nm process and plans to overtake it with 2nm, Huawei is still running with the 7nm process technology.
Although that’s just one side of the coin!
Huawei went through heavy sanctions back in 2019, where it lost the ability to use advanced chip-making equipment. Till 2023, the company fought many trading challenges that severely affected its smartphone business in the native region.
With the introduction of the Mate 60 series, the OEM also brought in the 5G Kirin 9000s chip which is far ahead of where the U.S. put barricades on China’s advanced chip-making process. Huawei is constantly trying to come up with better upgrades.
U.S. on the other hand is seeking new ways that can ruin Huawei’s scheme to make advanced chips. The American authorities now plan to blacklist all those Chinese firms that can help Huawei to make better processors. As per the details, this step falls in national security measures.
Yet the Chinese firm is looking forward to more growth and development. The Pura 70 series now brings the Kirin 9010 chipset which offers optimized performance. While Huawei’s rotating chairman Xu Zhijun says they will continue to rise despite U.S. pressure.
U.S. will increase pressure but we have the strength to continue our growth: Huawei
